SYNOPSIS

Dimension Guardian Finale—Dalton has crumbled under the weight of his destiny and his team has splintered in the resulting fallout. War has spread through all five realms and the Guardians and their families have taken refuge in Vestera's palace as they all desperately work to find their missing teammate and concoct a plan to defeat Yokouro before he tears the five worlds further asunder. With the Dimension Protection Council fallen and the Guardian Branch dismantled, the realms have slipped into anger and chaos, mimicking Dalton's own inner turmoil. While grappling with the weight of what he must do, Dalton gets a chance to see firsthand the consequences of his failure by visiting the cursed lands of the Kaneaka Palace, where an apocalyptic landscape has been carefully contained for eons. Following his harrowing nightmare in the cursed land, Dalton pulls his team together for one final stand against Yokouro DeVastes, rallying the Guardians and bringing the fight to the deserted netal-am realm, where the final battle between Dalton and Yokouro, and the dragon spirits they hold, will determine the fate of all five realms.

BOOK_LINK The Faith

In Chapter 10 during the light-hearted discussions at the dinner table, Juki and Rutu reveal they had a large fight that kept them apart for nearly 200 years. When asked what caused the fight, Vestera says that the fight cost "five wars, the population of nearly an entire continent, and over seven centuries of repair." This was the same time and world as The Faith series, and Juki, Rutu, and Vestera all show up in disguise at various points in that series.

SPOILERS AHEAD: The following information contains spoilers for the plot twist of Dimension Guardian.

OFF-PAGE GOODIES

Vestera Seeking Reassurance: Rutu explains to Dalton that Vestera has no one to turn to due to his immense power and insight into the universe. But he does turn to Rutu frequently to "check" himself. This is actually one of the major reasons Vestera's personality softened over time because he finally had someone to brainstorm with who had a similar scope of understanding. This is why his personality is so different from how it is shown in Roadside Paradise. Extra Fun Fact: Vestera "waking Rutu up in the middle of the night" is not an exaggeration. The night before this conversation with Dalton, he did go to their chambers, sit on the bed, and just ask Rutu for his input on the situation while Rutu was half-asleep.
Maintaining the Mate Bond: Vestera says that Juki and Rutu maintain their mate bond through meditation and sex. These are two separate ways to maintain the stability of their magic. Meditation provides longer-lasting stabilization, but sex is a way to maintain it for a short time when their scheduled do not allow them to have long sessions of meditating together to balance their magic.
Finding Keito (1): Finding Keito again is actually very layered off-page. When Keito reaches out to Rutu and connects with him telepathically but cannot speak, it is actually because of the parasitic curse that he has started to succumb to. Keito had been trying to reach out to anyone to help him and while he was trying to reach Vestera, the curse would only let him reach out to Rutu (this will be explained in another note). This is why no one else could connect with him, and even Rutu could not track him once their connection was broken.
Finding Keito (2): The parasitic curse that Keito was afflicted with was detailed in the scroll that Shannon stole from the Kage Library mentioned in Chapter 2. However, both Shannon and Yokouro had no idea the severity of the banned curse. As explained, the curse attaches onto any magic that touches it. Yokouro cast the spell on Keito, but when Keito fell and broke his leg (as shown in the book), Yokouro's own magic started working on healing the injury and the curse attached onto him. While Keito is writhing unconscious and suffering the effects of the curse, so is Yokouro. This is why Yokouro's actions are so quiet while everyone is searching for Keito. His lackeys are still working, but Yokouro is completely incapacitated right alongside Keito.
Finding Keito (3): Vestera, Juki, and Rutu immediately recognize the voice. The Guardians do not put the pieces together later, but the voice going around the room that is distorted and taunting everyone is the same voice as Rian-Ik-Lo, the apocalyptic beast on the Kaneaka Grounds. This is why Vestera, Juki, and Rutu immediately recognize it.
Finding Keito (4): When Vestera starts to ask Rutu about the voice in the room, Rutu immediately interrupts and says that "it's not possible, it's the parasitic curse." The hidden question there is if Keito could have wandered onto the Kaneaka Palace grounds as a means of hiding and could Rian-Ik-Lo have attached to Keito, meaning the beast was now loose on the realm. Since Rutu is the one who has the warding around the Kaneaka Palace to keep Rian-Ik-Lo contained, he would know if the beast was loose, which is how he answered so confidently that it was curse, and not the beast itself.
Parasitic Curse: The banned parasitic curse that was considered "soul-breaking torture" was actually created by Rutu himself and was based on what Rian-Ik-Lo did within the Kaneaka Grounds. This was why he was able to break the curse (he is the only one who can) and why the curse only allowed Keito to reach out to Rutu. If it had made telepathic contact with anyone else, it would have started the spread of the parasite. Extra Fun Fact: The shape of the smoke turning into a creature with "many horns" as Rutu is breaking the curse is actually the physical representation of Rian-Ik-Lo before any of the Guardians see it in person when they go to the Kaneaka Grounds in Chapters 11-14.
Juki & Rutu's 200 Year Fight: The big fight between Juki and Rutu is set at the same time as The Faith series. The wars and population lost Vestera mentions is not because Juki and Rutu were fighting and the magical fallout destroyed those in the vicinity. It was due to them working for opposing countries as advisors and pitting the world against each other as a means to undermine one another. The true cause of the fight is far too complex to go through in this space, and will eventually be explored in the Trade Masters Saga.
BIG SPOILER!!!: Yokouro's defeat and death mimics how Andrew was killed with the cut across the throat and the stab into the chest. This is to close the chapter of the dragon spirit Kuryaoin, who started integrating with Dalton at Andrew's death, and then left him at Yokouro's death.
Dalton's Son: While it's a romantic thought to think that Frieda just decided on the name Nicholas in the moment, the truth is Sadee did tell Frieda about her chosen names for her own children and Frieda thought it would be a beautiful way to honor both Sadee and Keito. She was not aware of the conversation Keito and Dalton had about the names.
Nicholas Teban: Nicholas' birth marks the beginning of a new chapter after the harrowing mission of Yokouro, but it is also the first respite Keito's soul gets. Keito's soul did fracture due to the traumas of his life as a demon, but the largest intact piece was reincarnated in Nicholas.
